I am an English Heritage member and I took my friend who isn't to visit this castle today. On arrival at the ruins of the original outer gatehouse, we met "Dave", a volunteer assistant who was on his way up to the castle. He offered to give us a guided tour on his way up. He was so friendly and knowledgeable that he made our day quite frankly. What a lovely volunteer; he is an utter credit to English Heritage.

Steep walk but worth it for the views of the surrounding countryside

Went due to having an English heritage pass, and it's the closest thing to where I live, has got some maxing views, not much of thr castle left, and quite a walk upto it, I will say aswell the lady that served us was ok with me but not great with the two lots of families infront of me, was very snappy and instructing.

On a nice day, the views are lovely. We were disappointed that the woodland walk was closed, but this wasn't noted on the website or FB page. Might not have gone had we known. The coffee was good, and the pasty was excellent. The car park filled up quickly, so go early or on a dull day. Save 15% by booking in advance.

Went there on a Geography school trip before the end of the academic year with a few other students and 2 geography teachers, amazing visit was mind-blown with how gorgeous the sights were! It was all so natural and the toilets were very close to the entrance and a picnic area about a 2 minute walk from the entrance with plenty of picnic tables. Not too long after i talked to my parents about how much i enjoyed the trip and my parents became English Heritage members and me and my younger brother have collected plenty of pop badges. Really enjoyed!
